Preservation of Mangroves in Thailand May Have a Major Environmental Impact

Mangroves, which are trees and shrubs that lie on coastal areas, may be very important in terms of helping prevent major damage from future tsunamis. The shrimp industry in Thailand continues to grow, and it appears that some mangroves must be removed in order to implement new shrimp farms. Hopefully not too many will be ripped out because they can certainly provide a positive environmental impact.

An assistant professor of zoology at the University of Florida by the name of Brian Silliman had a few words to say about this issue. It turns out that there are several governments around the world that are pushing something called "ecosystem-based management" which intends to conserve animal and plant life that are necessary for furthering human life.

Basically, this means that ecosystems and various habitats that include things like mangroves are being preserved because they have important functions that are essential to protecting the environment. It is very important that plans like these continue to be promoted internationally and I hope that more and more advocates and activists step forward with support. If mangroves can help control the amount of damage that a tsunami brings then I hope that they will be preserved at all costs.
