Environmental Pollution in One of New York's Major Bays
Not too long ago, Jamaica Bay in New York was the victim of a barge dump that has not only caused environmental pollution but also caused an outrage amongst environmental protection advocates and agencies. Pile Foundation Construction Company, Inc. apparently left 2 big barges in the bay and allowed them to slowly submerge into the water. This not only has effects on the quality of the water, but also on the various animal species that are inhabitants of Jamaica Bay. Because the surrounding areas of this bay are growing commercially, many different animal species are forced to live near the water. According to Wikipedia.org, Jamaica Bay is home to 48 different species of fish and 120 different species of birds.
Pile was given a notice by the Department of Environmental Conservation in September, which apparently stated that the company would by fined 10,000 dollars per day for each barge until they were removed from the water. Suzanne Mattei, the Regional Director of the DEC, stated that, "Jamaica Bay belongs to all New Yorkers." She then added, "It’s not a dumping ground for derelict vessels."
I would imagine that local residents of the Jamaica Bay area are outraged about this incident. Please feel free to post your comments about how you feel towards this issue.

I think big companies and the government alike need to take the finite nature of our environment seriously. We continuously pollute whether its one of nature's jewels or a residential area. Its really sad that less devolped nations are taking a stand against pollution while we seem to mearly watch from the background.
I agree, and while excessive focus has been put on something like global warming, evident issues like these are not given the same attention.
I don't REAlly want to know what you would like to express in that first post. The only thing I know is, that European countries are a) NOT less developed, but b) the most advanced nations fighting for environmental protection. (By the by, what gives you the right to call a highly developed state such as Germany "less developed"?! WE already HAVE a state's health care system, so Hillary would have no chance here...) We seperate waste, we recycle and we do lots of things that YOU have never even heard of. Apart from fuel-conserving cars, Eurpeans are far more aware of environmental problems than people in the U.S. No offence, so lets put it the other round. Obviously, Americans are not so interested in resources and their environment as people in other continents are. And from this point of view it is certainly a shame, as you always claim to be the most advanced nation... So don't put it the way as you were the ones just watching the world decline O_o YOU belong to the polluters as well as all of us do.
So it is really a shame that people don't think that something should be changed in your way of thinking. Interstingly, there won't be a change, unless somebody came up to you and told you, that you couldn't use your car anymore... And guess what would happen? The U.S. would be devastated at first and then tell everyone what they had to do to prevent YOU from going on foot in future. Sorry guys. NO pitty available here. You messed it up and if you don't start realizing that you endanger ALL of us (and not just yourselves) nature will be destroyed in a few years time... but why worry? We could live on MArs, couldn't we?
